The Centre
PHUNTSOK CHOELING is a Sakya Buddhist Centre, the only Buddhist Sakya Centre in New Zealand guided by the Spiritual Direction of Lama Choedak Rinpcohe. Lama Choedak resides in Australia and has founded many schools throughout Australasia. The Sakya school is one of four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the others being the Nyingma,Kagyu, andGelug.
The Centre was founded after a group of local people regularly gathered together to share their interest in Buddhism and was followed on with the blessings and naming of Chogye Trinchen Rinpoche, (Spiritual father, mentor and teacher of Lama Choedak) when he made a rare visit to Hawkes Bay in 2001.
The name Phuntsok Choeling means “PLACE OF SPIRITUAL ABUNDANCE”
The Centre enables people to learn the systems of meditation and study of the Sakya tradition of Buddhism, the lineage currently led by His Holiness Sakaya Trizin. In 2006 His Holiness’s son His Eminence Ratna Vajra Rinpoche formally opened Phuntsok Choeling and consecrated the Centre and gave teachings when the group established the centre at its current site in Herschell Street.
Since the 2006 opening, the Centre has hosted teachings by a number of Buddhist teachers and ordained members, retaining its strong ties with masters and their reknown teachings.
